No, this won’t be a post about some political scandal in Iraq.
Instead, I wanted to post an scam email — one where a supposed American soldier wants to share some of Saddam Hussein’s booty (booty here meaning “Plunder taken from an enemy in time of war.”)
Here’s the email:
I haven’t seen an email like this since “Bradon Curtis” a “special forces commando” working in Afghanistan wanted to send us some Taliban money a few years ago.
As always, these emails should produce more laughs than greed as they land in your in-box. The scam is one of the oldest in the book and will involve you giving up more and more money as you try to get your grubby, greedy mitts on 7.2 million of Saddam’s money.

I decided to have a go at it and the metal covering was kicked in only to find a metal box. I told my men to open the box in order to find out the contents and when they were opened to our amazement the box contained some US Dollars which amounted to $17.2 Million.
I however instructed them to keep this in high secrecy so that we can have the money to our selves, they all agreed to the plan and we were going to get the money out of the country but first we had to hide the money in a safe and untraceable location. I am now in desperate need of a “Reliable and Trustworthy” person who would receive, secure and protect these boxes containing the US Dollars for me up on till my assignment elapses here. We cannot afford to leave the boxes here in Iraq for any reason since Iraq is getting unsafe and dangerous everyday. We have no idea what could happen next as everything remains inconclusive at this point. I am fully aware of what your thoughts would be next which is why I have decided to give you 10%. I assure and promise to give you 10% of this fund, however feel free to negotiate what you wish to have as your percentage in this deal.

Hi Joanne, I have gotten in contact with the agent that helped shipped the package from Kuwait and he told me that the box is in London now and that the customs are holding it because they need your diplomatic passport. He told me that this is a security procedure by the customs to protect the abuse of diplomatic courier service by unauthorized personnels. He further advised that the only solution is for you to contact the delivery officer in charge of this shipment and explain to him that you dont have a diplomatic passport and you would like him to help you apply for immunity documents that will cover the shipment from London to the United States. You can request the contact details of the delivery officer in charge by sending an email to the shipping company and quoting the tracking number of the shipment. You will contact him and tell him that you are the authorized beneficiary to this shipment and you need his help to get immunity documents that will serve as alternative in the absence of your diplomatic passport. I have attached the picture of the money taken during counting so that you can see what we are talking about here.
