British Lottery Scam

Can five million Britians be duped? Yes, according to a study done by the British consumer protection organization Which?. Which? contacted more than 1000 Brits to see how widespread the scam problem is in the U.K. The results?

  • More than 28 million of 60 million citizens had been exposed to one or more scams.
  • Five million of those 28 fell victim to a scam.
  • The most popular scam related to "an automated phone call that invites people to claim a prize. A third of adults have received such a call and two million have responded, usually by calling a premium-rate number, which can cost up to GBP 1.50 ($2.70 U.S.) a minute."

The funny thing is that I've even seen people outside the U.K. fall victim to these international lottery scams. Here's a typical email that arrived in our honeypot inbox this week:

British Lottery Scam Email

As I was saying, I've received email from U.S. residents wondering if they'd really won after receiving an email like this. They never questioned how they'd won even though they weren't residents of the country where the lottery was held and had never even entered the lottery.

Greed makes us stupid, doesn't it? That's what the scammers count on.

UPDATE!
Many of you have also received snail mail versions of this scam. In this scam you receive a letter saying you've won as well as a check for $3,000 - $4,000 dollars to cover the taxes and processing fees - supposedly.

Anyway, listen up people.

This is a scam. The check is fake.

It may initially be accepted at your bank but will eventually be worth absolutely nothing. So when you deposit it and then send them a check from your account, you will lose money.

Ask yourself... Why would they send you a check and then have you send them a check right back for the same amount? Does that make sense? It does if you're trying to scam someone.

Every month i receive an e-mail like this. By now, i´m a millionaire, winning british lottery, volkswagen lottery (?), spanih lottery, and so. Of course, if we think in terms of economics and probability, that doesn´t make any sense. Either I am very lucky and there is a lot of money in those lotteries to give, or it is a scam. Anyway, the thing is that i have my e-mail inbox full of this crap evry month, and I can´t block it. They always manage to send me the same shit! I´ve tried to contact the british authorities to ask for help, to see if i can do something to, at least, stop these guys sending me these kind of e-mail. I guess they thought my e-mail was a scam.
Well, good luck an pay attention to not be fooled by greed.

I thought this "British lottery" email looked suspicious, that's why I came to your site. I've only read a few of your testimonials, but
just as I thought, it's gotta be a scam. I didn't see any of the details that are on my email on anyone's testimonial, so I'll give them
to you:

BRITISH LOTTERY HEADQUARTERS
CUSTOMER SERVICES
33 Yatch Basin Marina Office
Upon Tyne New Casle London
Batch# 14/211/0374
Ref# BTC/311OXI/02

Then it goes on to tell you about the details of your winnings, mine in particular is 1,000,000. It says that the funds were deposited in a
South African bank account, and that I have 30 days to claim my prize, blah, blah, blah. This is the contact information:

Mr. Anderson White
Tel# 27-73-2070-295
Email: andersonwhiteclaimagent@yahoo.co.uk

I know this has to be a scam, but please email me back to confirm that you have this information. I didn't reply to this email at all and I'm not going to.

Hi everyone. I'm from NY, NY, and I recently received a letter in my e-mail from Malaysia saying that my e-mail address was randomly selected and it turned out that I had the winning numbers and had won 1.000.000.00( That is one million U.S. dollars) My mother and I (for i am 16) read into the e-mail and we were totally excited about our good luck. But one really has to question people now in this day. How could we win a lottery if we didn't enter one? And why would someone just randomly give away free money? A million dollars at that. I had a sixth sense about this, so I looked it up to see if it was a scam, and I came to this site. I'm glad that my mother wasn't as gullable as I would've been. She only gave her name, date of birth, and our address, but she didn't give away any i.d., like her passport info or social security #. Are we still at risk of identity theft if we gave only that info? I hope not. I think it is so cruel to trick someone like that, get their hopes up, and then steal their money. But I guess that's our sad world. It's a good thing I listened to my instincts. A million dollars sure would've been great though...

Folks you can fight these idiots by setting up your spam filters to trash incoming email according to certain words in the body of the text or subject line. I set up filters for the words Lottery, Nigeria, “dearest one” and got rid of over half of unwanted fraud attempts. The other thing that will ruin these guys party if suddenly their own in-boxes were stuffed with junk. When I’m bored I copy some text insulting the persons very small sized manhood and inability to satisfy their wife (very effective for African scammers for some reaon) from notepad and paste it and hit reply. Now I have just wasted a half a minute of his time and left him frothing at the mouth. Priceless. So please, join me and lets spam the scammers!

Hey everyone

QUick tip...every email coming from any computer somehow is encrypted with an IP address. Now if you can get a good network person to be able to check your incoming mail and check for originating IP address, THen you have a valid ip address to give to the cops. ANd if they do their job, you can get the busted.
Best way to do this is try and engage the person you are talking to in a chat room...for instance, Yahoo or AIM. while chatting with them, yuou can google for internet ip address chat trackers and you will b e able to generate the IP address of the idiot without his know how. Then you can just pass that on to the cops

I received a letter last week from BRITISH FOUNDATION LOTTO, 20 ELLIS AVE, LONDON, ENGLAND, but the envelope was postmarked from Canada, with a return address of PO BOX 56890 MTL, QC H4L 2A8! I don't know how they got a hold of my name, either. I don't gamble or buy into lottery. I was actually excited initially, but as we all know, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. There was a seemingly very real check enclosed, made out to me for $3,450.55. The name in the upper left corner was JOHN HANCOCK, but without any other info, such as address. The bank was listed as CITIBANK N.A. NEW CASTLE DE 19720. I brought it to my bank to ask if the check was in fact authentic. They thought that it was. It had watermarks on the backside and perferated edges, they did a really nice job making up this check! Then I proceded to tell them why I suspected that it may be fraudulent and then they immediately pointed to the shredder and said that anything coming from any lottery is ALWAYS A SCAM!!!! And if I deposited it into my account, I would be letting them into my personal information, bank account #, name, address, birthdate, ETC!!! and from there anything could happen......namely IDENTITY THEFT!!! I haven't seen anyone mention BRITISH FOUNDATION LOTTO, but in reading what others certificates say, mine reads almost identical in wording!!! It also states to be "HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL AS PART OF OUR SECURITY PROTOCOL UNTIL YOUR WINNING HAS BEEN PROCESSED AND MONEY REMITTED TO YOU." Also states that I have to contact MY CLAIM AGENT, CATHY ANDERSON, OF ACME FINANCIAL GROUP AT 1226 BRIDGE STREET, STE 4000, LONDON, ENGLAND at the telephone number 011-44-7504490363. THE LETTER IS SIGNED BY A JAMES PARKER. This is horribly awful. What a tremendous tease. I could really use this money right now. I'm sure we all could. I can't stand people....robbers like this. REPORT THESE PEOPLE!!!! I PLAN TO LET CITIBANK and JOHN HANCOCK, AND GIVE COPIES OF THE LETTER AND CHECK TO THE BANKS NEARBY. I AM ALSO GOING TO SEND COPIES TO MY LOCAL NEWS CHANNELS, ALONG WITH THIS WEBSITE ADDRESS, SO TOGETHER, WE CAN FIGHT STRONGER!!!

W Foltz, did you read the comments here?

The checks are fake. You'll bank account will increase temporarily until your bank figures out that it's a bad check. The money will then be withdrawn. The scammers won't lose any money because the check is a forgery.

Deposit it if you like, but I wouldn't recommend it.

listen up people!
every letter and comment you have written above i received and and did all except give my ss# and acct.#'s. i did not know about this site so i investigated myself. i went to the bank and a lawyers office . the lawyer said they were all scams but advise me nothing on how to resolve this .. so i went to my bank and i told them this check might be a scam. so they did some checking theirselves. and found out that there are people in texas , a bank and others that are dead on their trails working on this. we as a people must keep reporting every check to our banks each time we receive one and bring copies of the letters. this is what i did and the banks were very helpful in trying to find out by tracking where these sources may come from . i even talked to a man that told me to deposit this check i received and not to tell anyone and then he would get in touch with me from there. but i out foxed him , i led him to think i was doing all he said and that is when i went to the bank and told them this check is a scam...we deposited it and waited the normal amount of time for this check to go through knowing it was no good but hoping they could catch this guy on the phone that was waiting for me to call him back as soon as it was deposited, but i did not call him back...and i have not heard if they caught him or not, but at least my baNK WAS WILLING TO TRY TO CATCH THE SOURCE OF WHERE THIS IS COMING FROM AND THE BANk teller is a friend of mine and she let me know that they were working on something to get to the bottom of this , the check was from texas like i said and i do not know for sure where the caller was calling from. but my bank was very careful by not giving any personnal info about my acct....the banks and news and newspapers they are finally casting commercials on tv about these things going on. we must keep reporting every letter to our banks and home town news people . i did this and it has finally took some notice and this is just cracking the surface. please people , be persistant in going to your local news people and banks to just show them how much these bad guys are determined to get our money. hound them , its the only way to get this resolved and warn people of who is doing this . i know alot of this is from ghuna and parts of afica and iran as far as spain even. so be careful and listen up to what u read! report to who ever will listen.
thanx, citizen from usa

I think strict measures should be implemented in going after the scammers!!
I also consider this as a major crime, to play with innocent peoples' feelings and having them go after nothing for nothing.
