British Lottery Scam
Can five million Britians be duped? Yes, according to a study done by the British consumer protection organization Which?. Which? contacted more than 1000 Brits to see how widespread the scam problem is in the U.K. The results?
- More than 28 million of 60 million citizens had been exposed to one or more scams.
- Five million of those 28 fell victim to a scam.
- The most popular scam related to "an automated phone call that invites people to claim a prize. A third of adults have received such a call and two million have responded, usually by calling a premium-rate number, which can cost up to GBP 1.50 ($2.70 U.S.) a minute."
The funny thing is that I've even seen people outside the U.K. fall victim to these international lottery scams. Here's a typical email that arrived in our honeypot inbox this week:

As I was saying, I've received email from U.S. residents wondering if they'd really won after receiving an email like this. They never questioned how they'd won even though they weren't residents of the country where the lottery was held and had never even entered the lottery.
Greed makes us stupid, doesn't it? That's what the scammers count on.
UPDATE!
Many of you have also received snail mail versions of this scam. In this scam you receive a letter saying you've won as well as a check for $3,000 - $4,000 dollars to cover the taxes and processing fees - supposedly.
Anyway, listen up people.
This is a scam. The check is fake.
It may initially be accepted at your bank but will eventually be worth absolutely nothing. So when you deposit it and then send them a check from your account, you will lose money.
Ask yourself... Why would they send you a check and then have you send them a check right back for the same amount? Does that make sense? It does if you're trying to scam someone.

I am glad my mother has me. Yesterday she received a check for over four thousand dollars. Sure.. I was like.."Whoa" at first. But the first thing I did was to go online and check out the company issuing the check. It is from a Home Improvement franchise in the north part of North America. I emailed them and informed them that someone is making counterfeit checks in their name. This check is from Canada. Just to let you guys know. Do not get fooled by it. Goodness know that I want it to be true. We need the money. I am going to hate telling my mother that she did not actually win $175,000 dollars.

After reading the foregoing emails I am convinced that series of emails received at my email address are not genuine. MAY GOD BLESS the people who are indulging in such activities.

I am totally shocked and surprised to receive about 10 emails all emanating from UK/Irish Lotteries stating that my email has won prize & 250,000 GBP, GB 100,000 etc. A certificate without date mentioning my name, File Number CWL/FAW3515/UK, Serial Number 002839 has also been emailed to me. The perusal of emails containing email addresses, persons names with their designation and signature and seal appearing on the certificate do not in any manner create suspicion in the minds of common man like me. Thereafter I went in google with their addresses and also visited british lottery perusal of which revealed several similar cases and now I am at rest. The point is who are these people openly playing with innocent people's lives. Thank God before embarking upon submitting my full details I consulted my friends and though their language looked harsh but it is reality. MAY GOD BLESS these giants.

Someone up there wrote that the6 actually got the 2.000.000 pounds. Bullhole! If that person won, he wouldnt have the time anymore sitting at the computer. He would be sitting on the beach in the Carribean.... si i would say. LIke Thailand? Try www.res24asia.com You wont need to win the lottery to go there. Have a nice day. The only thing you can count on in life is.... your job and your paycheck. At least thats real every day.

I live in Turkey and got an email to my hotmail account today, to say I had won 753,437 GBP in a British email lottery. It asked for my name and details exactly as in your sample letter. I suspected at once it was fake, so I have ignored it !

In these moments I am haciedo the negotiations to receive the money. Still they have not requested me ningun money but seeing these testimonies I go to decistir of continuing with this game. Lamentably it(he) is false. But what if it(he) remains clear with this type of delinquents is that some authority expert in the topic of swindles(rackets) for Internet deberia to intervene and to imprison these delinquents in order that they do not do to him(her) badly the people of good. Thank you for sharing his(her, your) experiences in this page

Are there any legitimate lotteries? i receive probably 15 to 20 e-mails a day about winning this amount or that amount. I'm just happy I did not follow through with any of that mess. But I must admit that, since my financial is as such, I nearly fell for what they were sending me. How do i get them to stop contacting me?
Tom Zawrotny
I`ve been contacted some 30+ times in the last few months. I keep answering them and go as far as sending money to them. They just won`t give up, all thirty somewhat winnings were different. None of these were the same, either different amounts, contacts, countries, areas different but same country, all different people but the same scam. I`m wondering why they have let me win millions of dollars so many times??? I now just look at this scam as amusement on my e-mail. The very first one I recieved, I really thought I won untill they asked for money for currier costs. Then really new it was a scam after I won again, and again, and again, and again. I guess I`ll keep answering them untill I REALLY WIN!! I`m STILL HOLDING MY BREATH.

ANYWAY,I RESPONDED BY SENDING HIM THIS VERY WEB PAGE WHICH SHOWS THAT THE "BRITISH WEB LOTTERY" HAS THE VERY SAME ADDRESS IN LIVERPOOL,UNITED KINGDOM THAT THE "UK NATIONAL LOTTERY" USES!!!

I also received a letter of notification of winning with a check. I was very suspicious, thinking they might get my personal info through the cancelled check. Anyway, I called the # and a man answered. No automated system, no receptionist, which made me more suspicious. I asked the guy if the company had a website and he said they didn't that was a dead giveaway. Anyway I googled " Apex financial, Inc. Lottery and found your site. Thank god for u guys, keep up the good work! Can we report this to the FBI or some other government agency???

Will S, if what you're saying is actually true, I'd be very concerned. You actually bought a house with this check that arrived out of the blue? I hope you're kidding...
Will S.
Funny thing, I went through with everything they asked and I received a check for close to 2 million dollars. That was a month ago. The check cleared and was okay. I bought a house and have had no problems with my bank or the lottery that I never entered. Maybe they screwed up, I was extremely poor before, but the British lottery company made me rich. Am I the only one?

I was told to csah the check of 2,992.75 and send 2,831.00 back to them via western union. i deposited the money in my account but yet all alone in my head i was thinking is it real or is it fake. I know exactly what the others have been going through. The only difference with me is I was contacted by email from the American/British lottery. It says I won 1 million dollars. I am really hard up for money but not that bad. They keep trying to guarantee tht this is offical. Don't be taken in by these scams. I think it is a real shame to preyed on people like this and something really need to be done about it. I also think these people need the same thing done to them, and let's see how they feel about it.

So far, I have won the most money ($750,000) of anyone out there. Mycheck is for $4,700.46. The issuing bank is American National Bank in Omaha, NE. Thank goodness they don't have my present married name. And thank goodness we are internet users, so we check on a lot of stuff. The signor on my letter is Edward Growings, Chief Finalcial Officer, Ph.D. (hah!) There was not a return address on the envelope or letterhead for British American World Lottery. I have had phone calls in the past with that foreign-sounding voice and they do become angry when you question them. I have told them that the phone call is being recorded and they hang up. Be content with what God has given you, whether you be financially desperate or are in great need. He will bless you his way, not the world's way. Nothing from nothing breeds nothing.
