British Lottery Scam
Can five million Britians be duped? Yes, according to a study done by the British consumer protection organization Which?. Which? contacted more than 1000 Brits to see how widespread the scam problem is in the U.K. The results?
- More than 28 million of 60 million citizens had been exposed to one or more scams.
- Five million of those 28 fell victim to a scam.
- The most popular scam related to "an automated phone call that invites people to claim a prize. A third of adults have received such a call and two million have responded, usually by calling a premium-rate number, which can cost up to GBP 1.50 ($2.70 U.S.) a minute."
The funny thing is that I've even seen people outside the U.K. fall victim to these international lottery scams. Here's a typical email that arrived in our honeypot inbox this week:

As I was saying, I've received email from U.S. residents wondering if they'd really won after receiving an email like this. They never questioned how they'd won even though they weren't residents of the country where the lottery was held and had never even entered the lottery.
Greed makes us stupid, doesn't it? That's what the scammers count on.
UPDATE!
Many of you have also received snail mail versions of this scam. In this scam you receive a letter saying you've won as well as a check for $3,000 - $4,000 dollars to cover the taxes and processing fees - supposedly.
Anyway, listen up people.
This is a scam. The check is fake.
It may initially be accepted at your bank but will eventually be worth absolutely nothing. So when you deposit it and then send them a check from your account, you will lose money.
Ask yourself... Why would they send you a check and then have you send them a check right back for the same amount? Does that make sense? It does if you're trying to scam someone.

I got scammed
OK. So I was stupid. I also received a letter saying I won and I followed their instructions and deposited the check and then Western Unioned the money as I was ordered. Now the check has bounced and I'm $3,000.00 in the negative in my checking account. My question is, has anyone else been scammed and what did you do about it? Who can I report this to so other innocent people won't be scammed?

I received the snail mail version of the letter today. I opened the envelope and the first thing I saw was the check. I looked it over and it appeared to be legitimate (water mark and all). The check was drawn from Suntrust Bank. I looked the number for Suntrust up on the internet, being careful not to use any number on the check to avoid falling into a trap. I called the bank and verified the availability of the funds and the fact that the account did actually exist. The check is drawn from an account in the name of Wade Raulerson Pontiac/GMC of Florida. The next thing I did was look at the number listed for this business on the check. I attempted to call it but got a busy signal. I looked the phone number up via reverse phone look-up on 411.com and found that it appears to be a cell phone in Saskatoon, SK. I then looked up the number for the business as listed on 411.com and gave them a call to alert them to this. These people doing the scam are really just slick as shit!!!!!!! The numbers on the check are the real account numbers for Wade Raulerson Pontiac/GMC. This is just incredible. Over time they have evolved so they are becoming harder and harder to detect, thank goodness for a website like this for those people with the inclination to never believe something that seems too good to be true. The people at Wade Raulerson put a flag on their account to ensure that people trying to cash the check would not be able to and I am mailing them the check and letter to assist with their investigation. It's amazing that there are people in this world put so much time and effort into a scam. If they put that much effort and energy into a legitimate method of making money they would be rich.

Hi I found out today the check is fake the bank checked into it and confirmed it. I hope everyone out there really looks at it closer. Malinda April 4 I hope you did win something but be careful you may have to pay it back. My letter was exactly like yours.

I got a letter in the mail and i was very happy it stated that i had won the british lotto. After reading this i have figured out that it was just a scam. some of the same letters that other ppl have recieved so have i. mine was also dated July 27, 2006. i won 85,500.00 minus 5,301.00 for sponsors commision. what a crock man!!!! i got a check for 3,993.56 and they wanted me to western union them 3,832.00 and then they would have a represenative bring the 80,199.00 to my house. my agents name was Phillip Johnson of Sun source financial managenment group at 30 Liberty Ave Suite 224 Saskaon SK s7l 6m4. and the telephone number was 1-306-880-2175. the guy phillip wasnt in the office (of course) i talked to a woman named Joanne who also kept putting me on hold. i took the check to the bank and they said that the check was liget and so was the company, but they told me it was a scam and they wouldnt cash the check. they even made a copy of it so that no one would. this sucks b/c i definatly could have used the money for lots of things and i hope that the ppl are caught. the police suck and they dont care. now if it was them then it would be a differant story. i wanted the thing to be real so bad. and since i have read a couple of letters on this site and they are exacally the same, so now i know i was being scamed. i aslo hope they rot in hell.

So I went online to check it out and found this blog. Should have known it was a scam, My son had a good idea go to a check cashing place and cash it and keep the money!, BUT THEN I THOUGHT I WOULD STILL BE SCREWED! Or the check cashing place would be either one , I tore up the check instead, I live in Washington State. I am trying to figure out who to contact to turn these scammersw in!

I received a letter on Sat.aug.5 2006 and said I had won WORLD wide lottery. everything word for word that Malinda April 4 had said that her letter . I deposited the check in a new account but I amm going to return the money back to the bank beause I was stupid enough to deposit the check in the first place. I have been entering sweepstakes for a very long time and I thought that I was finally there but I guess I was wrong again.
Aug. 7, 2006
I too received a letter from the British Gaming Commision regarding the British Lotto held in London, England stating that I was a winner of the British International Lottery programs. A check for $2,997.16 was enclosed to enable me to finance the international clearance fees of $2,833. The fees should be remitted to their designated North American Agent and I will receive a total of $85,500 minus $5,301 (6.2% sponsor's commission). I will receive a total of $80,199 and my agent will give me further details. I was to contact claim agent Monica Edwards, of Sun Source Financial Management Group at 30 Liberty Avenue Suite 224 Edmonton AB SK S7L 6M4, an accreditted agency to British Random Lotto @ 1-780695-0652. My prize must be claimed no later than August 18, 2006. The letter was signed from Luis Curry (Prize Co-ordinator)
Well, I knew something was funny. 1) No watermark on the back of the check (although, it did look real). 2) Misspelled words in the letter, starting with the title "British Gamining Commision" 3) If I won a lottery a) why did they send a small portion check and not all of my winnings. b) why do I need to deposit and then send something to them.
Bottom line, I knew right away and thought I do some research online to verify my belief. Thank God for internet and intuition.

I rcvd this ltr from a British Gaming Commission with a check of $3993.56, same as I've read here, I feel angry because I feel for the people who was a victim. Same thing, I researched this first before doing something I will regret and now, I am so thankful for this site that it is a confirmation that this is an ONGOING SCAM that is victimizing people from all walks of life..Life is hard and people do work for their money BUT why can't these people be caught? Thank you for putting this information online and WE REALLY HAVE TO BE CAREFUL! Its very important to research something so we know its the right thing! God Bless you all!

Today, August 5th 2006 I opened my mailbox to find a check stating that I had won the British Lotto, including a check for the amount of $ 2993.56 from BorgWarner Emissions/Thermal Sysytems drawn from Bank of America in Northbrook Illinois, which the check looks so real my kids & husband including myself was so ready to go the bank and make use of this money until I did a goggle search for all the companies listed on the check/ letter and came to this site. After reading all the comments now I am sitting and explaining to my son about all the scams that people do to get $ from other normal everyday working people.
It stated in my letter that I won $85,500.00 minus 5301.00 ( sponsor's commision) so actually I would win $80,199.00 but had an assistance check for $2993.56 so I could finance the international clearance fees. Stating I should contact the NORTH AMERICAN AGENT. I did try to call the # listed but the mailbox was full and no other messages could be left - GO FIGURE !

Another Scammed
I received the same check today and while I was thinking there was nothing I applied for. The amount of the check was for
$2995.15 and it came from the British Lotto. The check was written off an account with the company name of L & L Reproduction, which is supposed to be out of Paramount, CA. I got thinking and contacted Wells Fargo where the check was written off of and found that the account number and routing number at the bottom of the check was an actual account. I even went as far as calling the Better Business Bureau in Paramount to find that this L & L Company does exist and has never had any complaints against them. Then I got thinking and got on google and typed in BRITISH LOTTO and found this web site. So I contacted my local police dept and they came and got the check. I live in MD and the police stated that I have been the twenth person in my area to receive this check. So I ALMOST got scammed to, but because I used my head I was able to find all of you were in the same boat.

I recently recieved a mail saying that i've won 80k in usd, and a check of about 3k to assist with international fees. i called the woman to claim my prize and she told me to forward the money to a north american agent, and (as stupid as i was) i did forward about 700 dollars, which the check initially gave me due to the deposit. then i also forward out of my own pocket 700 dollars. is there anyway to get back the money at all? i'm in the middle of all this and i don't know what to do. i think consulting a lawyer would be too much of a hassle or waste of money.

Tammy Anderson with Number 250 813-1232. Supposed to be in Ottawa Ont. But number is from Victoria BC. However number is registered to a cellphone user in New Westminster BC. Weird huh? Anyway I knew it was fake as soon as I saw 3 DIFFERENT lottery enteties on the "Certificate of Award" You have a watermarked "Britian United British Lottery Corporation" (WTH?) Then in Red letter on the headliner- "World Wide Lotto Inc." Then you have in the paragraph mentioned in Bold Capital Letters "BRITISH INTERNATIONAL LOTTERY PROGRAMS" We also have Typos or misspellings. You have "pay out" then later in the letter is "payout". "bellow instead of "below" I'm just nitpicking the damn certificate od award.
Mindy
Yup, good thing I looked up British Random Lotto, or I would have fell for it too. Red flags went up as soon as I opened the letter. Postmark is from Canada (no return address), the check for $2,998.20 is drawn up in Delaware, and the company issuing it from the Limited, based in Columbus, Ohio. My agent's name wasBrenda Edwards of Royal Imperial Financial Management Group in ALABAMA??!!! Really! I called a few times to find the mailbox was full, or all agents were on the phone. When I finally talked to someone, she sounded Indian, and almost droned on about the information. Really, if you won $80,000, you would expect someone to sound happy for you or even say "Congratulations!" She told me to deposit the check, and after I did, to call back and the money would be transferred to me within 48 hours. They didn't need your account number, and you didn't have to buy anything. Perfect, right? WRONG! Why send back the money they just sent you? And why would an established company make so many spelling and grammar errors on their letter? Thank God I did some research on this.....John Papa and Douglas Ferdinand can rot in hell. I hope many more people can use this aside from me, I will be going to my bank first thing tomorrow to talk to the manager about what kind of action I can take! Good luck to everyone else!

PLEASE DON’T DEPOSIT THE CHECKS! WE WENT TO THE BANK AND HAD THE TELLER TO VERIFY WHETHER OR NOT THE CHECK WAS VALID, THE ONLT THING THEY SAID WAS THAT THERE WOULD BE A 7 DAY HOLD, THE VERY NEXT DAY,WE WERE INFORMED THAT OUR ACCOUNT WAS FROZEN FOR FRAUDULENT REASONS. EVEN THOUGH THE TELLER TOLD US IT WAS OK TO DEPOSIT IT, WE ARE NOW TOLD THAT , NOT ONLY, IS OUR ACCOUNT CLOSED, BUT ALSO, WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO BANK THERE AGAIN. I CALLED THE BANK HEADQUARTERS, THEY TOLD ME THAT EVEN IF WE ASKED THE TELLER , WE WERE ULTIMATELY IN CONTROLL OF EVERYTHING THAT GOES THRU OUR ACCOUNT. SO , PLEASE DON’T ANYONE TRY TO DEPOSIT THE CHECKS, THEY ARE DEFINATELY FRAUDS. ALSO, NOW , I HAVE A FRAUDULENT ACT ON MY RECORD………BE AWARE!!!! ARIZONA
You might want to check with your lawyer if you can legitimately keep you $3000--you could be guilty of fraud (theft?) and go to jail for it!

I received an email from the "National Irish Lottery" stating that I won a jackpot prize of EUR 4.025 mullion from an online draw. Good thing I found this site because I was supposed to wire them money tomorrow. Looking at the image above, I noticed that both emails have the same signature. Upon looking closer, I also found that the ticket numbers are exactly identical. So be warned, they are now using the Irish Lottery as a scam. Your site really helped us since the money that we were to send them was meant for my brain tumor medication. CURSES TO ALL SCAMMERS!!!

I recieved a call today on my cell phone, it was a real person and they told me to call another number, 18765403965. They claimed I won 2.5 million dollars and I needed to send a check for $900 to Jamaica so I could get the check FedEx to my house. They sent me a copy of the check. I don't buy it...and am not sending them a dime. Do not fall for this one. They claimed that I had won the British Lottery Sweepstakes...the check was from "Cash Payment of America" Can you say Bull Sh*%!

I work at a lawfirm and received an email on my office computer from a Mary McClord Ireland Branch, Howth Road, Dublin 3, Dublin, Ireland that I had won 2,500,000 Euro from a Lotto Jackpot of the Winners International Program which are drawn once a year. I was informed to email a Eric Johnson, Clearance Officer for more informationon how to collect my winnings. I was curious, so I replied to Mr. Johnson via email and received a reply from the "LOTTERY AWARD OFFICE", 121 Fulham Palace Road, London-England. Mr. Thomas David, Executive Co-ordinator to contact the Mr. Steven Anderson at HSBC Bank for immediate payment. Now let's see, Ireland, UK, and now USA. Looks like they are trying to cover their tracks around the world (lol) You guessed it---- I was skepticaland started doing research on the matter ran into this website along the way, hence this blog. I will advise as to the outcome of my research. Sorry for anyone who got caught in this scam.

Sincerely,
Sir John Barckley

Nice Try!!
I'm laughing at my British Lotto!! Check is for $2991.05 on a check from Geiger (based in Portland, Maine). The "Prize Coordinator" is Douglas Ferdinand (gee, why does it have a signature of "John Papa??"). Here's the really funny part: my "contact" is John Myers---the same name as my husband's best friend!! I called him and left a message asking where my $85,500 was at!!
Any clue as to who to contact to pass this scam on to? My local police told me to "file it."

My dad received a letter of this nature the other day about winning money from the British Lotto, complete with the check for around $1900. The letter had a bar code on it, did anyone receive a letter that contained a barcode? I would think this is a scam myself, although my dad said he entered the British Lotto a bit ago. Will be looking into it more.

I too have recieved on of these letters..........very tricky nasty people. They sent a check for 1965.50 drawn on a company SMS.ac. Wich is a very ligit company and I am now in contanct with them to send them the stolen check and stuff. sucks the money would have been fabulous but stupid eople will get theirs!
andreatherock
Got this via email. Knew it was a scam and replied to it with a very nasty email using very colourful language. I live in the UK so I knew that it was fake and since I am suffering with PMT at the moment, I thought I would vent my frustrations on these losers...not that they would care anyway but perhaps the person who opens my reply will at least feel a moment of shame and probably will wonder who has such a foul and disgusting mouth. Here is the email I recieved:

I like how they tell you to keep it confidential. I can imagine a lot of people are holding out hope that it might be real but please use your noggin, it is not real. So help others and post the email you've got so others will be aware of what to look out for. Basically, if you didn't buy a ticket, why would you win? Where is the money for the lottery coming from if no one ever buys a ticket????
Hope this helps.
