British Lottery Scam
Can five million Britians be duped? Yes, according to a study done by the British consumer protection organization Which?. Which? contacted more than 1000 Brits to see how widespread the scam problem is in the U.K. The results?
- More than 28 million of 60 million citizens had been exposed to one or more scams.
- Five million of those 28 fell victim to a scam.
- The most popular scam related to "an automated phone call that invites people to claim a prize. A third of adults have received such a call and two million have responded, usually by calling a premium-rate number, which can cost up to GBP 1.50 ($2.70 U.S.) a minute."
The funny thing is that I've even seen people outside the U.K. fall victim to these international lottery scams. Here's a typical email that arrived in our honeypot inbox this week:

As I was saying, I've received email from U.S. residents wondering if they'd really won after receiving an email like this. They never questioned how they'd won even though they weren't residents of the country where the lottery was held and had never even entered the lottery.
Greed makes us stupid, doesn't it? That's what the scammers count on.
UPDATE!
Many of you have also received snail mail versions of this scam. In this scam you receive a letter saying you've won as well as a check for $3,000 - $4,000 dollars to cover the taxes and processing fees - supposedly.
Anyway, listen up people.
This is a scam. The check is fake.
It may initially be accepted at your bank but will eventually be worth absolutely nothing. So when you deposit it and then send them a check from your account, you will lose money.
Ask yourself... Why would they send you a check and then have you send them a check right back for the same amount? Does that make sense? It does if you're trying to scam someone.

At the very bottom of your letter, to the left, there is a registered stamp, within this stamp what is the printing? I'm trying to make a comparison to these crazy letters.

I just recived my letter today!! These people really want to pray on desperation. This person sent me a letter made on Microsoft Word with use of word art as well as a cashier's check. I tried to look up the name and address of this place on the BBB website and it was non exsitant. And when I called the number the lady that answer asked for my name and I told her that I wanted to know what it was about first and I got hung up on. There was no backgroung noise so I think it was from someone's home. My worry now is how this person got my name and address...

Anything asking for you to send money in order to receive the winnings is a scam. You do not have to pay to collect winnings from a legitimate lottery. I got sucked into oneos these scams as well. What we can do to try and stop these idiots is to file a claim with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) at http://www.ifccfbi.gov/, maybe if enough people complain it can be stopped.

I received a letter in the mail as well. It has a check for $3,300.00.and I would get 61,300 back. Told me to cash it for taxes and what not. After seeing all these comments.. I beleve truley it is a scam. I will tear it, shred it. Whatever I have to do. Thanks everyone :)

I have recieved a letter also claiming its from something I signed up for North AMerican Sweepstakes as part of the International Promotions Program. My check though was for 1900.00 and financed for tax and clearance fee. It says Kindly deposit or cash the check to pay for the tax and clearance fee. Call the agent for more info....
As with the above the name James Langford is the Prize Director. British INternational lotto. Please contact Peter Kinsley of APEX FINANCIAL COMPANY SUBISDIARY OF BRITISH LOTTO CORPORATION 11500 40th AVENUE. EDMONTON ALBERTA CANADA T6J0R6 tel 1-819-329-1970.
The check though is from Merril Lynch and looks legit. I cannot see any flaws on it. Tomorrow my husband and I are going to the bank and to Merrill Lynch to find out. Everything is screaming Scam. Especially after seeing a duplicate name on here. However, like everyone else These people need to be stopped. Its like the companies preying on the elderly saying they have won just send in this amount of money or buy this or that. I've seen it happen too many times. I will post tomorrow what the bank and Merrill Lynch say. Im tempted to go to the police station as well.

Just a few minutes ago, I recieved a snail mail with a return address of ELG PRIORITY PROCESSING, POSTBUS 74101, 1070BC AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS. The letter inside it says: "You have confirmed eligibility for entry into the official British National Lottery, with an upcoming prize payout of up to 150 Million pounds....." I've seen a lot of email scams in my inbox but this snail mail is the first. The first thing that caught my attention is: where the hell did they get my address? My name? And why should I pay $15 as an entry fee. Well, I may sure be dreamin to get rich someday but this one is not gonna make me stupid.
What do you think? Thanks.
G.D.
I recieved a letter in the mail today, not email but regular USPS mail. My letter was almost identical to that one belonging to mscaralynn. The check was for a different amount but the company name is the same, APEX FINANCIAL COMPANY, SUBSIDIARY OF BRITISH LOTTO CORPORATION, It did have a Canadian address but it wasn't the same as the one on mscaralynn's letter. It did not ask me to give them any personal or financial information. I was wondering what would or could happen if I were to cash this check and just keep the money. This money could be put to good use right now and it is sooooo tempting. I wanted also to ask mscaralynn what did you do with yours? Did you try to cash yours or not ?
JDM
I got one of these in the mail yesterday. Thanks to everyone who put this site together, I didn't fall for it. I still really want to cash the check though...
Barry from Edgewater, Colorado
Mine came via snail mail, yesterday. It fits the general form, but is a little different. It came with a check in the amount of $2998.60 drawn on the Wells Fargo account of Kapco, 3120 East Enterprise, Brea, CA 92821-6237 www.kapcousa.com. I checked their website and found them to be an OEM Distributor of Aviation parts. This being the case, it makes no sense for them to be sending me a check of this nature.
The accompanying letter is as follows:
IRISH RANDOM LOTTO
IRISH RANDOM INTERNATIONAL
WINNING CERTIFICATE
Ref #WSCT 4567801G023
Winner ID:9056742
DATE June 20, 2006
We are pleased to inform you that after the just concluded IRISH RANDOM LOTTO held in Belfast, Ireland, that you emerged as one of the winners of the Irish International Lottery programs.
Participants were selected through a computer ballot system draw from one million five hundred thousand names(1,500,000) drawn from Asia, Europe and North America. Your name attached to ticket number 60087-6045 with serial number 01200115 drew the lucky numbers of 21-27-8-15-34 which subsequently won the lottery in the third category. You have therefore been approved for the lump sum of $85,500.00 USD yada yada etc.
It continues: Assistance check of $2997.55 is enclosed to enable you finance the international clearance fees of $2845.00. (Note check amount is different from check itself and the grammar is, to say the least, strange.)
I am then directed to keep this claim from public notice until my claim has been processed and money has been deposited to my account. To begin my lottery claim, I am further diredted to contact my claim agent, LISA HOWARD, of Standard Financial and Securities, 7811 GATEWAY BLVD NW, EDMONTON, AB T6E 6M1, an accredited agency to IRISH RANDOM LOTTO at TEL: 1-780-604-5934. (I called this number and received a standard after hours message, which noted their message box was full. BIG SURPRISE, Golllleeee, and all that happy *********! The company name was almost correct. In what sounded like an electronic hiccup the word securities came accross as tees.)
The letter finishes advising me that all prize money must be claimed not later than JULY 6, 2006. Ensure you contact your agent for THE ACTIVATION AND AUTHORISATION of your check. It is signed by John Wesley Pope, Prize Co-ordinator.
Guess I didn't win after all, huh!!!??!! Go figure. If it were real, with my luck, I would die tomorrow. Oh well . . .

My letter came by mail two days ago. I told everybody at my work and we prepaare text about it. it will be published at one of the most popular newspaper in my country. Will see if would be any reaction from the Lottary. yes, it was by email, and it was from `British lottary Award`. I got pounds, they ask me about my basic personal information to fill it in the paper wich thay ask me to print and send by fax or to copy and scen and send them by e-mail. They told me that it is not goood to send them by mail becaouse of the risk of criminals who can maybe see my personal information... xaxaxa... well, i ll write them soon (of course not for sending my information) and ask them everything possible... After all, our text in the newspaper will be much more interesant....I also noticed some gramatical errors in spite of the fact that English is not my first language. In first two letters they didn`t ask me for any money. they just ask me to give them my bank accoutn NO or to choose chack option and give them passeport NO... i suppose they will ask for money late when i choos payment option... it is logycal to ask for money soon i thought at the firs site and will see am i right about this...For the moment I wondered what would be if i cash the chack and don`t send them any money... With milion dollars you can have really good loyer everywhere on the planet..... but... it is for film.. in real life, I suppose, all we can get is the trouble with the bank and police... let see what will happen next...

I noticed something a bit different here. The letters above my last one seem to have come from e-mails and requesting a lot of personal information from everyone. My letter arrived via postal mail and after having it check thoroughly it has been declared legit! The water markings on the back of the check disappears when rubbed, then re-appears a short time later. So does the patent numbers on the bottom front of the check. The letter I received does not request information from me. It does not tell me to send anything nor does it ask me to keep my winnings confidential. It just asks me to either deposit or cash it. Another thing I noticed is that the name "United British Lottery" is not the name on the letter I received and so far no one else seems to have the same letterhead as I do which is what I am looking for. I've gone to other websites asking the same information but I'm not getting the answers I'm seeking. Could I be wrong about this?
Alissa
I got letter by mail that i won 1.000.000.00 punds by National lottary UK.... i never beleive in good news like this but i admit i had plans to spend that money.... it was just a dream. I am journalist so i tried to find all information and i got this site very fast. It is not logical to win huge money without any fee, without gambling. I did nothing. Maybe i ll just continue with conversation with the "agent". Yoday i ll teel him that i ll give all subject to my loyer because all that big money and ask him for aditional information. Will see what he will say... After all it must be published to annonce everybody about this scam!!!

Here's one! I received my letter today along with a watermarked "cashier's check" in the amount of $2,300.00. It says Not Negotiable After July 23, 2006. This is what was to be a part of the 65,000.00 in total. And who is the North American Sweepstakes people anyways? The only thing missing was the "SPECIAL NOTICE" like the letter above had and I was given the choice to either deposit or cash the check. The remainder of the winnning monies $62,700.00 would be sent minus the 2.300.00. (to leave 60,400.00 instead-right? suuuuurrrreeeeee, And like the one person who worte above, why send me the "supossedly" TAX and clearance fee when they could have just kept that amount and just send the rest? Of course I was excited until I started doing some reseatch and found this website. Thank goodness for you all. We need to stick together against predators like the BRITISH INTERNATIONAL LOTTO and go whup their butts...repeatedly.
Mine says, PLEASE CONTACT GRACE WILSON OF APEX FINANCIAL COMPANY, SUBSIDIARY OF BRITISH LOTTO CORPORATION, 10221 111TH STREER NW, EDMONTON, ALBERTA TSK 2W5 CANADA TEL: 1-604-0021

I appreciate very much your kindness in establishing this web page for those of us who have been notified of winning the "United British Lottery." Since I did not enter said lottery, and this, on its face, is far too good to be true, I did a google search and you guys popped up first thing.
My notification sent a "check" for $3,900, which I am to deposit to offset a 15.6% tax and process fee on the total of $25,000 I am supposed to have won. Somehow or another, after some process that is not explained in this letter, I am ultimately to net $21,100 out of this. The check appears to be an original document carrying watermarks front and back. It is written on the account of TRW Automotive in Valley View, Ohio, on a Bank One account in Detroit, MI. A very real curiosity is what the United British Lottery and TRW Automotive in Ohio could possibly have in common. Also, the sentence structure and style in my letter is evidence, to me at least, that its author has English as a second language.
There is a "Special Notice" that, "This Award program has come to the public notice and in order to avoid unauthorized activity and individuals contacting you, please ensure that this winning is kept absolutely confidential."
Again, thanks for establishing this web page. My heart breaks for the innocence of folks who have received this notification and have swallowed it hook, line and sinker. A lot of them are out money they didn't have to begin with. Count me in on any retaliation, if that is ever possible.
I don't think we have to worry about how God feels about this. As they say in the part of the US where I live, "God don't like ugly."

This one is now making the rounds in the United States. I got the you WON, call or send "everything you don't want others to know" to online@2006lotteryuk or phone # 447 031820162. These guys are amazing, they even talk about fraud on the page. The name was Mr. Lonny Cathy, fun name but I'll bet his middle name is FRAUD. I love it when they point out, mentioning fraudulant activities, why you should never respond to any unsolicited email on winning. By the way they said my "website" was entered automatically for me and won. They are cruzin the internet looking for suckers.
I'm just too rich to have won millions anyway!
Stay safe, don't let the bastards spoil your dreams, when I actually buy a ticket to enter a lottery and win, I will gladly give out my information.

One of my husbands' co-workers received this email. They sent him a check and he fell for it. When I heard about it I tried to warn him, but he wouldn't listen. Needless to say, his bank account has $4,000 less in it. I'd have to say he's the most optimistic person I've ever met; either that or the most stupid. He still didn't believe it was a scam until I showed him that I received the exact same email. Confirmation numbers and all.
It would be nice to win. But we can't ALL be that lucky.
Great Site -- Thanks a lot!

I received a letter in the mail today, (snail mail). I opened it and found a letter and a check for $2,998.75. At first I was excited, but this reality hit and I realized that I didn't enter into any lotto. So I've been reading up about scams on the interent. I'd love to find out who these a**holes are.
Does anyone know what I should do with the letter and the check?
If so, please email me.
Thank you!!
Ethan
I was scammed by the united British Lotto. I cashed The cheek but did not sed any money to the company. I was wondering if the bank could charge me with any thing as far as passing a bad cheek or something to that effect. Or if i could get into any type of crinimal activity by passing this cheek? Please help i am already out $3,ooo

Beware people, I'm sure that Publishers Clearing House is connected or sold my information to this "United British Lotto". I gave my bank several copies of the letter and check so they could warn other customers and to let there security office be aware of what is going on. Upon showing my bank manager this check that was sent to me, she immediately said "COUNTERFEIT"!! My bank wasn't aware of this scam yet, but they thanked me for bringing in this mailing. All of there future mailings will have a warning notice in the envelope. ALSO BEWARE THE OLD PYRAMID LETTERS ARE COMING BACK. (Example: "Send a dollar to each of the six people on the list enclosed, then send a copy of this letter to 100 or more people. Requesting that they send out 100 or more letters, etc. etc. etc. Bottom line-"BEWARE""

I am concerned because my uncle received an email from I think it was the British Sweepstake Lottery International Program notifying him that he had won. Since the first notification, he has been answering back several emails. The last one he received has attached a winning certificate and details of the person he must contact in the bank for the payment. They had never asked for money or fees. Is this too good to be true?

6/6/06 - I received a check dated 5/31/06 for $4500.55 from Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. After reading all this information I am not cashing this check. Thanks for saving me!

I just received a letter informing me that I have won the United British Lottery & this is my notification of winnings. It states that I have won a total of $25,000 which will be mine if I just deposit the check which they have presented me with for $3,900 for the tax & process fee. The most interesting paragraph states:
Special Notice! This Award program has come to the public notice and in oreder to avoid unauthorized activity and individuals contacting you please ensure that this winning is kept absolutely confidential.
I have to say that I am a reader of the fine print, but the scarry thing about this is that there is none & the check looks so real, with a watermark on the back and all. What set me off is that it says that I won the British lottery drawn in London, but the check is written from an Ohio address by a Michigan bank and the letter was postmarked in Canada!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All beware of things that appear too easy!!!!

I got a letter on Saturday with a check for $1990.00- I called the agent this morning- told me how my name was randomly drawn in a promotional giveaway. The man had a European accent, and told me to contact him after I deposited the check into my account and he would send me the remainder of the money I won ($63,010) via UPS or Wire transfer. I called the number on the check- they told me to deposit the check since there were funds available in the account.
What I thought was a bit fishy- was the address of Mellon 1st Business Bank on the check- Los Angeles, CA 80071 and I know California zipcodes start with a "9". So I went to Mellon Bank's website and spoke with the check verification department- they told me the company LGM Escrow Services doesn't exist and the check is a counterfeit. I looked on melissadata.com and searched the phone numbers listed on the checks- they were cell #s.
Beware!!! Although the check looks real with watermarks and everything- check with the bank(look for the # on the web) don't call the number on the check- and ask to verify funds. It's all bogus...

Got the e-mail last night. Didn't give my personal info and instead asked how I had won and if they could confirm it, received a second e-mail with address and phone numbers, but again, no answer on how I had won and again, they wanted me to give my address and phone number, etc.
Sent a las e-mail, stating "payment method" and asking one more time how I had won and to confirm, only to receive another e-mail giving me my "cheque number" and asking me for almost 2000 dollars for insurance.
Oh! I won 3.500.000 (Three million five hundred US Dollars) (This is how it was written. Doesn't seem suspicious that such a prize be awarded by people that don't even know how to write?).

I myself got a letter and check attached for the amount of 2,975.00. The check had a watermark on the back of it, from colgate palmolive company with a reputable bank in delaware. i was amazed and thought i had won. I came upon this web site and read through it. So glad I did. I will not cash this check but will turn it over to N. C. Attorney General office. So dont be fooled by something to good to be true.
The ltter was not postmarked and was received by me on May 26,2005. It was from Global union Sweepstakes.
I wish these scammers could be caught and I am going to do my best to help this happen.

THIS IS A SCAM! DO NOT DEPOSIT THE CHECK OR GIVE ANY INFORMATION TO THESE CRIMINALS!
Very interesting scam they have going on here. They tell you you have won a lottery in another country (which you never entered), send you what looks like a legitimate check for a substantial amount of money (mine was for $3,980.95) drawn off of a well known bank as a "tax and clearance" fee that they are advancing you based on sending you your winnings (anywhere from $70,000 - $95,000). I called and was told I needed to deposit the check and let it clear. Once it cleared I was to call my "agent" back and wire the exact amount back to Global Financial Management and they would release the rest of the winnings to me. Right.
The check will clear apparently (from reading the string above), but will bounce 6 months later. This company makes its money on the suckers who actually send them the exact amount of the check the received. AND you will be hit with bank fees for the bounced check. AND you will not see any of the winnings. AND you will have learned an important lesson - "If it seems too good to be true, it is"
