Iraq Email Scam

No, this won't be a post about some political scandal in Iraq.

Instead, I wanted to post an scam email — one where a supposed American soldier wants to share some of Saddam Hussein's booty (booty here meaning "Plunder taken from an enemy in time of war.")

Here's the email:

FROM: Sgt. Donald Greene To whom it may concern. I am an American soldier, I am serving in the military of the 1st Armored Division in Iraq, as you know we are being attacked by insurgents everyday and car bombs. We managed to move funds belonging to Saddam Hussein_s family. The total amount is US$7.2Million dollars in cash, mostly 100 dollar bills. We want to move this money to you, so that you may invest it for us and keep our share for banking.We will take 60%, my partner and I. You take the other 40%. No strings attached, just help us move it out of Iraq, Iraq is a war zone. We plan on using diplomatic courier and shipping the money out in one large silver box, using diplomatic immunity. If you are interested I will send you the full details, my job is to find a good partner that we can trust and that will assist us. Can I trust you? When you receive this letter, kindly send me an e-mail signifying your interest including your most confidential telephone/fax numbers for quick communication also your contact details. I haven't seen an email like this since "Bradon Curtis" a "special forces commando" working in Afghanistan wanted to send us some Taliban money a few years ago.

As always, these emails should produce more laughs than greed as they land in your in-box. The scam is one of the oldest in the book and will involve you giving up more and more money as you try to get your grubby, greedy mitts on 7.2 million of Saddam's money.

I just received the email from SGT Steve Gullivan. I have taken the diplomat Mr. John Harvey's phone number and did a reverse look up. I will have his home address within 24 hours.....who wants it!

Please allow me to introduce myself.I am Sgt Steve Gullivan, a US Marine
Sgt.serving in the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment which Patrols the
Anbar province, Iraq.I am desperately in need of assistance and I have
summoned up courage to contact you.

I am presently in Iraq and I found your contact particulars in an address
journal. I am seeking your assistance to evacuate the sum of 25million USD
(Twenty Five Million USD) to the States or any safe country,as far as I
can be assured that it will be safe in your care until I complete my
service here.This is no stolen money and there are no dangers involved.

SOURCE OF MONEY:

Some money in various currencies was discovered and concealed in barrels
with piles of weapons and ammunition at a location near one of Saddam
Hussein's old Presidential Palaces during a rescue operation and it was
agreed by all party present that the money be shared amongst us.This might
appear as an illegal thing to do but I tell you what? No compensation can
make up for the risks we have taken with our lives in this hell hole. The
above figure was given to me as my share and to conceal this kind of money
became a problem for me, so with the help of a British contact working
with the UN here(his office enjoys some immunity)I was able to get the
package out to a safe location entirely out of trouble spot.He does not
know the real contents of the package as he believes that it belongs to an
American who died in an air raid,before giving up trusted me to hand over
the package to his close relative.

I have now found a secured way of getting the package out of Iraq for you
to pick up. I do not know for how long I will remain here as I have been
lucky to have survived 2 suicide bomb attacks by Pure Divine
intervention.I will give you 25% of the total sum.

This and other reasons put into consideration have prompted me to reach
out for help. If it might be of interest to you then Endeavor to contact
me and we would work out the necessary formalities but i pray that you are
discreet about this mutually benefiting relationship.My first demand to

I too have gotten a email from persons purporting to be American soldiers, Captain David Freeman. He is saying that there are two boxes worth $17m +. Please let no body be cheated to this. They got passports and real photos and the boxes while counting. I just don't understand while others need to do people like that.

I HAVE RECEIVED 2 E-MAILS RECENTLY WITH PHOTO ID,S OF AMERICAN SOLDIERS LOOKING VERY AUTHENTIC REQUESTING THAT I HELP THEM IN REMOVING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF HUSSEIN,S MONEY OUT OF IRAQ. OF COURSE I DID,T FALL FOR THIS SCAM AND I DID,T REPLY TO THE E-MAILS. IT,S UNBELIEVEABLE WHAT THEY TRY TO DO TO SCAM SOMEONE. I HOPE NO ONE FALLS FOR THIS, IT DOES SOUND PRETTY CONVINCING ESPECIALLY WITH THE U. S ARMY PHOTO I,DS, I WONDER HOW THEY CAME IN POSSESION OF THESE I,DS? Thanks, Please assure me that you will keep what i am about to tell you topmost secret within you so that my job would not be jeopardized,because it took me time to make up my mind to contact you and to offer you this proposal of mine of which my whole life depends upon,I will like truth and honesty to be our watchword in this.

Today, I and my group of 2 Army Engineers were alerted on the need of some reconstruction works in Haifa Street, a long thoroughfare of high-rise buildings built and occupied by Saddam Hussein when he was alive here in Baghdad . We proceeded to the marked site and as I commenced evaluation work, I discovered an unusual bulge in a cellar which I presumed to be a storage room. I decided to have a go at it and the metal covering was kicked in only to find a metal box. I told my men to open the box in order to find out the contents and when they were opened to our amazement the box contained some US Dollars which amounted to $17.2 Million.

I however instructed them to keep this in high secrecy so that we can have the money to our selves, they all agreed to the plan and we were going to get the money out of the country but first we had to hide the money in a safe and untraceable location. I am now in desperate need of a "Reliable and Trustworthy" person who would receive, secure and protect these boxes containing the US Dollars for me up on till my assignment elapses here. We cannot afford to leave the boxes here in Iraq for any reason since Iraq is getting unsafe and dangerous everyday. We have no idea what could happen next as everything remains inconclusive at this point. I am fully aware of what your thoughts would be next which is why I have decided to give you 10%. I assure and promise to give you 10% of this fund, however feel free to negotiate what you wish to have as your percentage in this deal.
